The federal government has directed that all primary and post primary schools in the country should by next academic session commence the teaching of history as a stand-alone subject.

A statement by a presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, says that President Buhari gave the directive in Abuja through the office of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education.

Ahmad wrote, “The Federal Government has directed all primary and secondary schools across the country to immediately implement the teaching of history as a standalone subject from the next academic calendar

History was officially deleted from primary and secondary school curriculum in 2007 during the Obasanjo administration.

Prior to its complete obliteration, history had suffered serious attacks beginning from the 1969 National Curriculum Conference, which resulted in the adoption of a National Policy on Education, and subsequent adoption of a 6-3-3-4 system of education.

The conference saw the teaching of history in Nigerian primary and secondary schools decline gradually until its removal from basic school curriculum in 2007 and implementation in 2009 and 2010.
