Many Deltans were shocked on Tuesday when Patrick Ukah was named as one of the eight nominees for appointment as commissioner and member of the State Executive Council.
In fact his name was the first on the list, which also included a former commissioner for Education, Professor Patrick Muoboghare, Chika Ossai, James Augoye, Peter Mrakpor, Festus Ochonogor, Basil Ganagana and the only woman, Florence Alanta.
No one ever gave Patrick Ukah a chance due to the odds that tended to count against him in the twilight of his tenure as Commissioner for Information in the last dispensation.
He got a bad name in the crisis in DRTV Warri, the purchase of eight cameras for N18m among other contracts alleged to have been inflated and for his seeming unfriendly manner of approach.
Governor Okowa, however, looked beyond what could be said to be Ukah’s bad side and renominated him for a second chance, having seen in him the qualities that outshined his deficiencies as Commissioner for Information.
Having been fortunate to secure renomination, the onus is on the nominee for reflect on his past, make corrections and adjustments where necessary as he prepares for another term of service to Deltans.
