The management and staff of Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS Asaba now live in fear of the weather as a result of the massive flooding of the station whenever it rains.
Barely a week ago ravaging flood broke into the offices after taking over the premises, leaving in its trail a monumental damage to broadcast and office equipment, as well as files and vital documents, particularly in the Accounts and Administration departments.
The station had hardly recovered from the shock of the last incident when another heavy rain came down on Thursday to take it back to the experience it had almost put behind it. The flood was close to window level and took about three days to subside.
The television arm of the station is the worst hit as the TV had been off air for one week as a result of the last flooding, though the radio arm has managed to be on air.
Today’s rain and the resultant flooding has only compounded the already bad situation for the broadcast outfit, as more damage was recorded which would take some more time to fix.
The contractor handling the storm drainage project, a substantial part of which passes through the DBS premises, is to blame for the latest nightmare of staff of the station.
Not only is SETRACO doing the job at the wrong time of the year, the firm has messed up the premises of the station with piled up laterite, damaging every available space with its heavy duty trucks.
Added to this, the construction company also chose to treat the DBS section of the drainage project last after linking the tunnel to Okpanam road thereby exerting pressure on the already heavily silted open massive drains which easily overflow at the slightest rain.
Those living behind DBS are not spared the harrowing experience as their houses are also submerged in the aftermath of the flooding.
The situation in DBS Asaba calls for a State of Emergency to avert the collapse of the station and the loss of lives.
The earlier this is done the better.
