The Delta State Government Transition Committee has presented its report to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa with recommendations on critical sectors of the economy.
The recommendations of the committee include an embargo on the award of contracts in the 2019 budget cycle, legal backing for the activities of vigilante groups and the constitution of a board for the state Security Trust Fund to stem the tide of insecurity in the state.
The Committee also recommended a single board and management for Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba and Warri for effective service delivery and the review of the law establishing the Direct Labour Agency to enable it focus on road maintenance and rehabilitation.
Others are a mandatory retreat for politicians and technocrats in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as the upgrade of the Delta State Job Creation Office to an agency.
Receiving the report from the committee chairman, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Governor Okowa thanked members of the committee for a thorough job and declared that the document would serve as a blueprint for his second term in office. He said his administration would hit the ground running immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.
Governor Okowa announced that his administration had embargoed the approval of projects and award of contracts until October this year to enable government focus on the payment of contractors and the completion of ongoing projects across the state.
The Governor said government would organise a retreat at the beginning and at the middle of his second tenure to update political office holders and technocrats on the action plan of his administration and put them in the right frame of mind for the implementation of policies and programmes.
He admitted that a lot needed to be done to revive Delta Broadcasting Service Asaba and Warri to make them more efficient and effective, and promised that his administration would take conscious steps in addressing the challenges facing the stations.
Governor Okowa assured Deltans that he would be more focused on the governance of the state in his second term in office, stressing that he would not allow himself to be distracted by political intrigues.
The Delta State Government 2019 Transition Committee was inaugurated on March 23, to review and refocus the SMART agenda of government.
