The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has appealed to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to declare a state of emergency on Okpanam road, in the Delra state capital territory, revoke the contract and re-award it to a more competent contractor.
The NUJ in a statement issued by the Chairman, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu and Secretary Comrade Churchill Oyowe, said the road, particularly the Okpanam axis, has remained uncompleted since it was awardrd over eight year ago.
It described the condition of Okpanam road as an embarrassment to the state capital territory and a negative influence on the promotion of the numerous road projects embarked upon and completed by the Okowa administration in Okpanam.
The union noted that Okpanam road was too strategic to the Delta state capital territory to be left in its present condition which it blamed on the inconsistent progression of work by the contracting firm handling the road project.
According to the NUJ, work had stopped for some time now on theĀ road and the rainy season would soon enter its peak period, stressing that the little progress recently made before the stoppage of work might come under serious threat from flooding as experienced in the past.
The union, therefore, blamed the poor state of the road on incompetence of the contractor handling the job and called on the state Governor to take a drastic action that would see to the completion of the road.
The NUJ also called for a similar measure to be taken on DLA road, another strategic road that had dragged for so long.
While thanking the Governor for the massive award of road contracts across the state, some of which have been completed, the union, once again, congratulated him on his overwhelming victory at the gubernatorial poll of 9th March, 2019 and wished him greater success in his second tenure.
