Delta state government has said academic excellence will not be ignored in the quest for the discovery and development of sports talents in primary and secondary schools.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa stated this at the finals of the 2018/2019 Delta State School Sports Festival and the Headmasters Cup held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba. Nosiere Primary School, Agbor emerged winner of the Headmasters Cup after defeating Destiny Primary School, Ughelli by one-nil via penalty.

The school went home with a cash prize of one million naira and an eighteen seater bus, while Destiny Primary School, Ughelli got the sum of seven hundred and fifty thousand naira for emerging second.
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, while speaking on the occasion, said government would continue to encourage young talents in sports and ensure the provision of sporting facilities with a view to retaining its number one position in National sports.

He promised that the Headmasters Cup which had been abandoned for many years would be an annual event, and expressed optimism that the next administration would continue with the competition for the overall benefit of the people.

The Governor commended the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for its commitment to encouraging school children to engage in sporting activities and urged thr Ministry not to relent in the discovery of more talents. 

Basic and Secondary Education Commissioner, Mr. Chiedu Ebie thanked Governor Okowa for his passion for sports development and gave an assurance that talents who were discovered would be encouraged to excel in their studies. 

School Children from Primary and Secondary Schools in the state were grouped into five zones where they participated and won laurels in the finals of track and field events in the Delta State School Sports Festival.
