Delta state Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has announced a reward of a brand new GS saloon car for the state chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union, Comrade Benson Efiotor, who returned a whopping N53m
Mistakenly credited to his account as salary by the state government.
Governor Okowa, who made the announcement in Asaba while addressing the state workforce during the celebration of this year’s Workers’ Day, commended Comrade Efiotor for his rare show of honesty, given the temptation the huge amount could have exposed him to.
He called on workers in the state to emulate Comrade Efiotor, stressing that it pays to be honest.
The Governor reaffirmed his promise to pay workers in the state the thirty thousand naira new minimum wage approved by the Federal Government.
Governor Okowa said with the promise workers in the State should re-dedicate themselves to service, assuring that his administration would remain committed to sustaining its policy on training and retraining of workers in order to enhance professionalism and productivity in the state civil service.

He said government was also committed to clearing the backlog of pension entitlements and promised to look into the issues raised by Labour on the Contributory Pension Scheme before the end of his first term in office.
Governor Okowa pointed out that his administration was sensitive to the plight of the teeming unemployed graduates which informed its decision to initiate a process of recalling some of the new employees recruited by the immediate past administration in the state.
The Governor appreciated the prevailing cordial industrial harmony in the state which had facilitated regular payment of salaries and promotion arrears and urged the organised labour to always embrace dialogue in pushing for workers welfare.
While expressing gratitude to the state workforce for its support in the just concluded general elections, Governor Okowa reminded the workers of their critical role in building a greater and stronger Delta State.
Earlier in their remarks, the State Chairman of the the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku and the State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Michael Nwobodo thanked the State government for accepting to pay the new minimum wage.
They also thanked the Governor for the regular payment of salaries and the backlog of salary arrears as well as the new Secretariat project, and appealed to him to address pending issues affecting the workers, especially the contributory pension scheme.
