Christians in Delta state on Sunday joined their counterparts in other parts of the world to commemorate Palm Sunday which signifies the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
Catholic, Anglican and other churches faithful made processions, clutching palm leaves as they sang to the glory of God.
At the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Bishop’s Court Asaba, the Bishop, Diocese of Asaba Anglican Communion, the Right Reverend Justus Mogekwu, told the congregation that the kingship of Jesus Christ was foretold and he waited patiently for God to achieve the prophecy.
He said Christians should emulate the patience of Jesus Christ and surrender all they had in submission to God.
Right Reverend Mogekwu said Palm Sunday was of great significance to Christians because it confirmed the authority of Jesus Christ over mankind.
The service featured Bible readings, choir ministeration, prayer for peace and blessing of Palm leaves.
At the Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, west end Asaba, the Parish Priest, Reverend Father Emmanuel Ikenga, said Palm Sunday should be marked with sincere worship of God, as it reminded Christians of the submission of Jesus Christ to the will of God for the sake of mankind.
Father Ikenga reminded parishioners that Palm Sunday marked the beginning of the Holy week, which included the Good Friday, the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ from death among other events.
And at the Pasture of Life Church Asaba, the presiding Bishop, Jude Akhere, charged Christians to strengthen their faith in God to be able to make heaven.
Bishop Akhere said good personal relationship with God was important adding that Christians must be prepared to devote their time and resources to the service of God.
He argued that the celebration of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem should not be called Palm Sunday because other leaves and clothes were laid out in the path of Jesus Christ as he entered Jerusalem.
Bishop Akhere, however, encouraged Christians to see Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem as a demonstration of God’s love for mankind.
