Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said Delta state will continue to play a leading role in sports development in the country.
He state this on Monday in Asaba at the finals of the 3rd edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principal’s Cup competition played in the Stephen Keshi Stadium.
Governor Okowa said the state government would focus on discovering young sporting talents and redirect their energy towards winning laurels for the state in international competitions.
He reassured the students that government would strive to sustain the Principal’s Cup competition and appealed to teachers to hunt for talents among children, especially during Inter House sport meets.
Governor Okowa assured that his administration would restore the past glory of sports in the state and announced that the Headmaster’s Cup competition for primary schools and inter school competition would hold next month.
The Governor thanked Zenith Bank, the official sponsors of the Principal’s Cup competition and the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for ensuring the success of the competition and urged them not to relent.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary, Mr Chiedu Ebie, said 756 secondary schools took part in this year’s competition as against 519 schools last year.
Obule Integrated Schools, which emerged winners, went home with a cash prize of one million naira and an 18 seater bus, while Obiaruku Boys’ Secondary School which placed second got 500,000 naira.
