Women, especially mothers of Christ Anglican Church Okpanam, yesterday joined their counterparts in the Anglican Communion across the country to celebrate this year’s Mothering Sunday.

The event afforded them the opportunity to reflect on their role in the society.

In a message on the theme : A Mother Called By God “submits completely to God’s will”, the guest preacher, Evangelist Chi-Kenneth Umeh, said submission to the will of God was imperative to every mother because it could serve as a guide to a stable, peaceful and godly home.

Evangelist Umeh stated that mothers should be submissive to their husbands before they could successfully be submissive to God, adding that they needed the grace of God to be able to do so.

She described mothers as home builders, stressing that a home without a mother could hardly make progress spiritually and materially

The guest preacher cited Mary mother of God as a role model for mothers and called on them to emulate her sterling virtues of obedience, faithfulness, humility, holiness and discipline, adding that they should be prayerful at all times.

Mrs Umeh stressed the need for mothers to bring up their children in the fear of God and to always reach out to the needy in the society, especially the orphans and widows.

The service featured presentations by children, the Girls Brigade and mothers in the church.

There were also special thanksgiving by the mothers, cutting of cake, a special prayer session for the mothers led by the Vicar, Reverend Cannon U. B. A. Okolotu and presentation of awards to deserving mothers.

The awardees include Dame B. D. Idundun, Barrister Ego Ikeatu, Lady Dorcas Onyeweli, Comrade Blessing Chi-Onikoyi, Evangelist Chi-Kenneth Umeh and Mrs Evelyn Ovwourie.

Others are Mrs Maria Ojoh, Mrs Charity Dibiamaka, Ezinne Lucy Nweke, Ezinne Mildred Maduemezia and Mrs Ekene Ogbuotobo.
