Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has promised to support self help development efforts of communities in the state.
The Governor made the promise while commissioning the newly completed market stores and rehabilitated old garri line stores and walkways at the Ogwashi Uku market, in Aniocha south local government area.
He commended the partnership between the Ogwashi Uku Development Association, the state government, the World Bank and the European Union which gave rise to the successful execution of the projects and encouraged other communities to initiate self help projects to fast track the development of the state.
Governor Okowa, who was represented by the commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, Reverend Omatsola Williams, commended the Ogwashi Uku community for its interest in the economic advancement of the people, saying that the community was the first to initiate such projects in the state.
The Governor lauded the project implementation committee led by Sir Augustus Onukwu for delivering quality jobs.
The President General of the Ogwashi Uku Development Association, Mr. Ndikanwu Ashinze and Omu Edith Rafua, thanked the member representing the Aniocha south constituency in the State House of Assembly, Honourable Angela Nwaka, for her financial contribution to the projects and appealed for continued government support for the development of the area.
The commissioner for Economic Planning, Dr. Kingsley Emu, represented by a Director in his ministry and World Bank representative, Mrs Patience Ogbewe, called on the authorities of Aniocha south local government to synergize with the Overseas Development Agency, ODA, to ensure regular maintenance of the project and possible expansion of the market through Public Private Partnership, PPP.
The chairman of Aniocha south local government, Chief Isaac Anwuzia, represented by the council’s Treasurer, said the project would enhance the economic life of the people and sued for the sustenance of the partnership for the realization of the collective developmental aspiration of the people of the area.
