The Delta state government has given approval for the recruitment of teachers for post primary schools in the state.
The state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, who made this known while briefing newsmen in Asaba, said so far over 47,000 online applications had been received for the 1000 first phase vacant positions across ten subject areas.
They are English, Mathematics, Basic Science, Basic Technology, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Further Mathematics.
Mr Ebie said the vacancies had been advertised in the print, electronic and social media channels, adding that there would be Computer Based Test of the applicants, with scores to be received real time.
The Education Commissioner said there would also be oral interview with micro teaching components, pointing out that subject experts and specialists had been engaged to generate test items and participate in the oral interview and micro teaching sessions.
He further stated that successful applicants would serve in rural and riverine areas of the state for a minimum of five years in the first instance.
Mr Ebie explained that the recruitment exercise was being guided by the realities of the time, including the new National Minimum Wage which would exert financial pressure on the state government when implemented.
He listed the challenges of the Basic and Secondary Education ministry to include overwhelming number of schools requiring infrastructural intervention, vandalism of school facilities, and teachers refusal to serve in rural and riverine areas.
Others are the migration of SS3 students outside the state for WAEC and NECO organised examinations, as well as the collection of unauthorized fees and levies in schools.
