Non indigenes of Delta state came out in their large numbers from all parts of the state on Wednesday to endorse Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for the March 9 Governorship election.
The event, which took place at the Cenotaph Asaba, attracted contingents of non indigenes of different ethnic nationalities across the country residing in the state.
Addressing the gathering, the state chairman of the Non Indigenes Association, Chief Joseph Ikhena, said the decision to endorse Senator Okowa was informed by the strong sense of belonging given to non indigenes in the state.
Chief Ikhena said Senator Okowa, more than other Governors of the state, had appointed many non indigenes into positions of authority, provided empowerment to many through the Job Creation Office and spread development across the state from which non indigenes were benefitting.
He assured the Governor that the non indigenes, numbering over one million, would vote massively for him in Saturday’s election and charged members of the Association to ensure the realization of the Okowa re-election project.
Speaking after his endorsement, Senator Okowa, who was represented by the Director General of the State PDP Campaign Council, Honourable Funkekeme Solomon, thanked the non indigenes for their overwhelming solidarity and support.
The Governor promised to impact more positively on the lives of the people when re-elected and assured Deltans and other residents of the state of a better deal in his second term in office.
Okowa told the gathering that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, empowered him to seek re-election, adding that the rotational arrangement of the governorship seat which started from Delta central to Delta Delta south favoured his re-election bid.
He noted that he had endeavored to fulfill his first tenure campaign promises to deserve re-election.
Senator Okowa urged the non indigenes to discountenance the threats by the opposition to hijack the election and encouraged them and indeed all eligible Deltans to turn out enmass to vote for him and all House of Assembly candidates.
Others who spoke, including the Deputy Director General of the State PDP Campaign Council, Prince Ned Nwoko and the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Chief Festus Ochonogor, called on the non indigenes to translate their numerical strength into votes for Senator Okowa in Saturday’s governorship election.
