A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress APC in Delta state and one time Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Honourable Victor Ochei, has described as disheartening the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, without any cogent reason.
Ochei, who was reacting to the development which came as a rude shock to Nigerians, said there was no reason why Nigeria should not have a seamless electoral process that would leave no one in doubt that the country has come of age.
He noted that INEC had repeatedly assured the President, Nigerians and the International community that the elections would hold as scheduled when actually it had not put its house in order.
Ochei condemned in strong terms the recent attack on an APC chieftain in Agbor, Mr. Sebastian Okoh, stressing that seeking elective position should not involve the spilling of blood because it is not a do or die affair.
Also speaking another member of the APC in Delta state, Barrister Charles Chukwuedo, ruled out the possibility of a foul play in the postponement, saying that INEC as an independent electoral body had the right to decide the way to go towards achieving a free, fair and credible election.
Barrister Chukwuedo, however, said INEC should have been sure of its arrangements before assuring the nation of its readiness to conduct the polls on the chosen dates.
For his part, the Delta state governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party, Richard Kimeku, said he saw the postponement coming and was happy with it because it would afford them more time to prepare for the elections.
Kimeku urged Nigerians to see the postponement as a step towards strengthening the electoral process.
The DPP governorship candidate called on Nigerians to come out en-mass on February 23 to cast their votes, adding that they should put the postponement behind them and think ahead.
