The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with DB Legal Consultants, Triple Justice Foundation, Cleen Foundation and Vote 4 Naija Initiative has organised a workshop for personnel of the state police command as they prepare for Saturday’s election.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta state command, Mr. Yinka Adeleke, who declared the worshop open, reminded the officers and men to be deployed to the polling stations that they must be neutral and exhibit a high sense of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The CP, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration in the command, Mrs. Ngozi Onadeko, noted that although there would be other security operatives on electoral duty, focus would be more on the police due to the confidence of the public in the force.
Mr. Adeleke said the police personnel should be guided in their actions and utterances this digital age, adding that they should guard against violence during the polls as the Inspector General of Police was passionate about free, fair and credible 2019 elections.
In a keynote address, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG David Igbodo, of DB Legal Consultants, said the worshop was to refresh the memory of the police personnel on what they already knew and to keep them abreast of electoral offences to avoid security lapses during the elections.
AIG Igbodo stressed the importance of security to the elections and charged the personnel for the electoral duty not to work with any political party, but to ensure that there was no snatching of ballot box or vote buying which could trigger off violence.
The theme of the worshop, which ends on Tuesday, is “Electoral Offences and the Evil of Vote Buying.”
