The Delta state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria CAN has thrown its weight behind the zoning of the Governorship position among the three senatorial districts of the state in the spirit of fairness, equity and justice.
Speaking at a mega prayer rally for peaceful elections in Ughelli, the association said Delta north like the other senatorial districts should be allowed to complete its second term in office for the sustenance of peace.
The state Chairman of CAN Senior Apostle Silvanus Okorote said the rally was organised to pray for peace in the state ahead of the general elections, pointing out that the zoning system in place was the foundation of peace in the state.
He said INEC should avert crises by conducting credible elections and called on security agencies to remain neutral throughout the electoral process.
He called on politicians to play by the rule of the game and desist from hiring youths to cause violence.
Also speaking, the state chairman of the Penticostal Fellowship of Nigeria PFN, Bishop Kingsley Enakirerhi and the immediate past chairman of CAN, Reverend Gideon Oyibo, called on Deltans to stand for equity, justice and fairness by reelecting Governor Okowa.
They said the only way people with the fear of God could occupy positions of authority was for Christians to come out enmass to vote, saying that bloodshed and suffering were the hallmark of wicked leaders as being experienced in some parts of the country.
Responding, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa thanked the Church for its role in the sustenance of peace across the state, particularly through fervent prayers, adding that government would continue to partner with the church in the overall development of the state.
While thanking the state chapters of CAN and the PFN for supporting his reelection, Governor Okowa urged the church to intensify prayers for peaceful and credible elections and for wisdom for politicaians occupying various positions of authority.
The theme of the prayer rally was seek peace and pursue peace.
